well. erm, YAY! man, ANET know how to spoil us, htis is just very nice of them, opening up the new profs for a couple of days. Presumably they wont want us to see to much of those new profs, and i imagine that only a couple of skills will be available for them, rather than all of them at once.
On the number of characters issue, i always have a slot left for pvp characters, but the trouble is i may want to make a pve assasin or ritualist toget the skills asap. that will leave me without a dedicated pvp slot. basically i hope ANET see that by adding 2 new profs they might have to give us all a extra character slot. I doubtthey will for the weekend, its the servers having to remember what everyones characters are/have that makes other MMORPG players pay, so just putting that new strain on the servers for 2 days will not happen. i imagine that opening a new char slot will mean getting new/more powerful servers. I hope they do
edit: imo GW:F is a stand alone game, but everything will carry thro. u will still have the same charaters and items as u did in the first game, but ppl who dont have GW can play GW:F as well, if u see what i mean. I seriously doubt that theywill give us 4 more character slots for the update, i think if they do it may be 1 or 2, and not 4. Old characters will be playerable in GW:F cos it says somewhere on the press release that existing chars will be able to change their sec prof to ritualist or assasin in cantha.
The otherthing which has me scratching my head is what lvl this weekend will take place at. lvl 20 is max at the mo, but i have talked with beta tester friends (they are playing it as we speak no doubt) and it is said that lvls could go as high as lvl 60 (my beta tester mate was lvl 31, which he considered to be low :S) My question really is, will we all be lvl20 + pvp chars,or will we be lvl 20s. either wayit makies little difference, but having 1000+ health would be nice *dreams of running to droks with a mesmer *

From my experience, Slashdot is the Paris Fashion of geekiness. Which is to say, quite pretentious, or at the very least, full of people who want to be better than everybody else. I know people who live, breathe, and die by what Slashdot has to say, and get all hot and bothered every time they post a news report about a new Linux core or Microsoft security flaw. The community is very elitist, very opinionated, and very pigeonholed. Only "certain things" can be "cool."
So, needless to say, I don't think it strange that Slashdot snubbed this at all. I don't like it, but I'm not surprised. I'd say this is relatively newsworthy.

To answer some of your questsions from what I can:
This is a PVP weekend event. Charachters created during this event (mainly Assassin and ritualist) will be wiped after the event is done. Since Factions wont be released until later this year, keeping those PVP charchters wont be an option Im basing this off of the beta weekends they had last year for GW. People had worked themselves all the way towards the end of the game Just before release, the charachters and content was wiped, and they had to start over. Your current GW chrachters will be fine.
As stated by the magazine article, chapter 1 charchters and chapter 2 will be able to play together. As far as the PVP event, I do not know.
Stay tuned to get more official info.

OH I cant wait till this event it will be totally awesome!!
And btw ive came up with an assassin alteration to the CC Blood Magic necro that invloves using the assassins teleportation skills to get into close range then uses the necros life stealing skills to weaken the enemy then finishes its foe with the assasins combo attacks
Ill post it after The PvP Event so that i can iron out the possible flaws

Someone slap me if i'm being the stupid one here, but do you somehow have privy to what the Assasin skills are going to be before the rest of us? Have you, say, ninja'd your way into NCSoft H.Q. and stolen their super-secret plans for the new classes?

the skills were all posted, and are in the cgw, but you can't post them anywhere on the interweb or the police will take your wife and home.

The truth is your friends are no beta testers and are just trying to sound important. The official word is there are going to be no changes in level caps at all.

No, I didn't think they would shut the existing game down. You misunderstand me.
I'm asking, if the free preview is "stand-alone"--does it mean our "stand-alone" characters will not be in the guilds we are in at the moment? OR, do the free character slots somehow "mesh" or add onto our existing accounts?

I'm ordering a few dozen new keyboards. By the end of the weekend I will have gone through at least 6-7 keyboards-worth of PrtScr.

One thing I havent read anything about is if the game engine itself will be getting a facelift when Factions is final. While im looking forward to the preview I for one would like to see some graphical improvements in the final product.
To be specific, mor eparticles, animated weapons, more than just fire, energy. lightning in the shape of a ball, etc. I just think it would be a nice added touch.

On that note...My local FYE store has a sign hanging out front noting that Halo 3 is "Coming Soon" and pre-orders will be taken. I agree. Nothing has come up stating that it will be released this year or next year.
Back on topic:
I agree with VampiricuS posts about graphical update. GW looks nice as it is, but I too would like to see more stuff added. Even if it is little stuff.
Also, at this time, keys are still not available. I plan on getting two or three to give to my friends so they can try out the weekend event.
